A young vegetable
Butternut squash is a newer plant than most people think. Charles Leggett of Stow, Massachusetts bred it in 1944 by crossing pumpkin and gooseneck squash. The skin is a tan yellow. The flesh inside turns deeper orange as it ripens, because it is full of beta carotene. The Wikipedia page on butternut squash tells the story.
Crayon and screen
Crayola has a Butternut Squash crayon in its 2019 box of Pearl Crayons. Wikipedia gives it as #E74F00, a redder orange than the #FC7604 on this page. Our code comes from an open online name list with no clear source. It is close to pumpkin and safety orange.
