More colors for sign tubes
Early neon signs came in only a few colors. Hydrogen gives a purple red glow, and mercury gives blue. Since the 1950s, phosphors first made for color television have added nearly 100 new colors for sign tubes, says the Wikipedia page on neon lighting.
The survey code
#BC13FE is the neon purple from the 2010 xkcd color survey, in which web users typed names for colors they saw. Wikipedia's alphabetical list shows #9457EB instead, a softer lavender purple. Ours is very close to electric purple, #BF00FF. Black text on it scores 4.66 to 1, which passes for normal text, but only just. Try other pairs in the contrast checker.
