The gem behind the name
Fire opal is a clear to cloudy opal with a warm body color that runs from yellow to orange to red. Unlike most precious opals, it usually shows no flashes of rainbow color. Ones without any flashes are sometimes called jelly opals.
The best known source is the state of QuerΓ©taro in central Mexico, so many are sold as Mexican fire opals. The orange red base color is the mark of every fire opal, as the Wikipedia article on opal notes.
Two codes for one gem
The #FD3C06 on this page is a hot red orange. It is the same code the 2010 xkcd color survey gives for "red orange", and its use as Fire Opal comes from an open name list. Wikipedia's alphabetical list gives Fire opal as #E95C4B, a softer coral red. That entry points to a section that is no longer in the Shades of orange article, so its source is unclear.
On screen, #FD3C06 sits near orange red and scarlet.
