The drink behind the name
Root beer is a sweet soft drink from North America. It was made with the root bark of the sassafras tree. A pharmacist named Charles Hires made a root tea from sassafras in 1875. A year later he showed a version for sale at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and began selling his extract.
