Named after a gemstone
The color takes its name from the opal. This stone is a form of silica that holds water inside it, from 3% to 21% of its weight. Precious opals flash many colors as you turn them. A single flat code can only hint at one of those colors.
Two codes for opal
Wikipedia's alphabetical list of colors gives opal as #A8C3BC, a dull gray green. The opal on this site is #AEE0E4, and it is a different color. It is paler and much bluer, a bit like the milky blue of some opals. It comes from an open online name list that does not say where the code came from.
Close neighbors on screen are powder blue and pale turquoise.
