About shades of gray

Gray sits between black and white. It is the most common neutral in design because it lets other colors stand out. Warm grays lean toward brown, and cool grays lean toward blue. In British English it is spelled grey, and both spellings mean the same color.

How to use this page

The cards show the classic gray color names from light to dark. Press Show more community names to add hundreds of newer names. Use the filters to keep only light, medium or dark shades, or only muted or vivid ones. Click a swatch to add it to your palette at the bottom of the screen, and click a name to open its color page with all codes and matching colors.

To test a shade as text on a background, open the contrast checker. To make a full 50 to 950 scale from one shade, try the Tailwind scale maker. If you want to make a shade with paint, the color mixer can suggest a recipe.
